A COLORING SERIES BY SORA MIKAMI

PREFECTURES OF JAPAN

Forty-seven books. Forty-seven prefectures. One country at a time.

ONE COUNTRY, BY LINE

Japan is the rare country that draws itself by line. Tiles, brushwork, mossy stones, paper screens. The seam of a temple eave against the sky. This series gathers all forty-seven prefectures, one volume at a time, into a coloring collection drawn for slow attention.

Each book is forty original line illustrations of one prefecture, rooted in the things that prefecture considers its own: a Yubari melon halved at the rind, a Goryokaku star fort, a Tsubame-Sanjo workshop hammer steady at mid-morning, a single shimenawa at Izumo. The 8.5 x 8.5 inch square format sits comfortably in the hand. Single-sided pages mean no bleed-through. Each volume opens with a short editorial introduction in the register of a magazine essay, not a guidebook.

Volumes can be coloured in any order. Together they sketch a country one place at a time, on paper made for breathing room.

This was one of the best coloring books I have ever purchased. The designs were incredibly detailed, making this one of the most relaxing experiences, helping me cool down after a long day. The final product as well, no matter what colors I filled it in with, was so beautiful. The blank page was a super smart move from the author as it made sure the colors on the different drawings didn't overlap. Overall 10/10 experience, I highly recommend. I wish there were more drawings tho!!
