VOLUME 45
MIYAZAKI
Takachiho Gorge, Aoshima Island & Cape Toi Wild Horses
The prefecture descends. It starts high in the basalt uplands of Takachiho, where columnar joints stack into vertical hexagons above the green still water of the gorge and the slim ribbon of Manai Falls, then drops east through cedar groves and rice plain to the Pacific, and runs south down a long palm-lined coast to the wild headland of Cape Toi. The myth runs the same way. Amaterasu retreats into the Amano-Iwato cave somewhere on this northern ridge; the gods coax her out; the light returns. Yokagura masks still come out of their wooden boxes at night in the village halls, painted cheeks bright in lamp light, and the dance keeps going until dawn. Below the highlands the coast does its own carving. Around the small green hump of Aoshima, tides have eroded the sandstone shelf into a tessellated grid the Hyuga fishermen call the Devil's Washboard. Further south, vermilion Udo-jingu sits inside a sea-cave under the Nichinan cliffs. Past Obi's old castle town the road thins to a single line above the headlands, ends at Cape Toi, and the misaki horses graze loose on the grass. Forty pages here, following that descent: gorge, shrine, mask, plain, sandstone shelf, sea-cave, mango in tissue paper, horse in the salt wind.
“Forty pages from gorge mist to the salt grass of Cape Toi.”

The Miyazaki coloring book is Volume 45 of Sora Mikami's Prefectures of Japan series, a 47-volume collection that explores Japan one prefecture at a time. It gathers 40 original black-line illustrations of Miyazaki. It draws on Takachiho Gorge, Aoshima Island, and Cape Toi Wild Horses, alongside the everyday scenes Miyazaki considers its own.
You will find Takachiho Gorge, Aoshima Island, and Cape Toi Wild Horses, together with the landmarks, food, and quiet corners that give Miyazaki its character. The compositions move between detailed, intricate pages and calmer, more breathable ones, so there is something for every mood.
Yes. The book mixes detailed illustrations with more open, breathable designs, so beginners and experienced colorists alike can settle in. The large 8.5 x 8.5 inch square pages give you plenty of room to work, and every page is printed single-sided.
Colored pencils, markers, and gel pens all work beautifully. Because every illustration is printed single-sided on white paper, you can use heavier media without bleed-through onto another design. Slip a sheet of card behind the page if you want to be sure.
It is Volume 45 of a planned 47, one book for every Japanese prefecture. The volumes can be coloured in any order, and together they sketch the whole country one place at a time. Miyazaki sits in the Kyushu & Okinawa region of Japan.
