IWATE

Sanriku Coast, Nanbu Ironware & Hiraizumi Temples

Iwate occupies the northeast shoulder of Honshu, the second-largest prefecture by land area, a rectangle pinned between two ranges and the open Pacific. The Ou Mountains form its western spine. The Kitakami highlands rise to the east, falling away into the Sanriku rias coast, where the sea has cut a long row of inlets into the headlands. Between the two, the Kitakami River runs the prefecture south through farmland and old castle towns. Move down that geography and the stops accumulate. On the coast: the white rhyolite combs of Jodogahama, the two-hundred-metre cliffs of Kitayamazaki, the lone Miracle Pine at Rikuzentakata, baskets of Sanriku uni hauled from cold water. Inland and uphill: the limestone pool of Ryusendo, the boatman poling through Geibikei gorge, the gilded Konjikido at Hiraizumi keeping its twelfth-century quiet. In the central valleys: the magariya farmhouses and kappa pools of Tono, Hayachine kagura masks, the Ishiwarizakura cherry that split a granite boulder outside Morioka District Court. Above it all, Mt. Iwate holds its symmetrical shape over the capital. Forty pages here. The route is coast to mountain by way of river and farmhouse: Nanbu tetsubin on the brazier, wanko soba waiting under its lid, chagu-chagu horses in their bells, snow settling on Morioka rooftops. The line that holds it together is north, cold, and deliberate.

“North, cold, and patient, one page at a time.”
  • 40 original Iwate Prefecture illustrations
  • Single-sided pages to prevent bleed-through
  • 8.5 x 8.5 inch square format
  • A mix of detailed and breathable compositions
  • Brief editorial introduction to Iwate
  • Anyone with an interest in Japan, its culture, and its northern landscapes
  • Adults who use coloring for relaxation and quiet focus
  • A considered gift for friends and family with a love of Japan

The Iwate coloring book is Volume 3 of Sora Mikami's Prefectures of Japan series, a 47-volume collection that explores Japan one prefecture at a time. It gathers 40 original black-line illustrations of Iwate. It draws on Sanriku Coast, Nanbu Ironware, and Hiraizumi Temples, alongside the everyday scenes Iwate considers its own.

You will find Sanriku Coast, Nanbu Ironware, and Hiraizumi Temples, together with the landmarks, food, and quiet corners that give Iwate its character. The compositions move between detailed, intricate pages and calmer, more breathable ones, so there is something for every mood.

Yes. The book mixes detailed illustrations with more open, breathable designs, so beginners and experienced colorists alike can settle in. The large 8.5 x 8.5 inch square pages give you plenty of room to work, and every page is printed single-sided.

Colored pencils, markers, and gel pens all work beautifully. Because every illustration is printed single-sided on white paper, you can use heavier media without bleed-through onto another design. Slip a sheet of card behind the page if you want to be sure.

It is Volume 3 of a planned 47, one book for every Japanese prefecture. The volumes can be coloured in any order, and together they sketch the whole country one place at a time. Iwate sits in the Tohoku region of Japan.

This was one of the best coloring books I have ever purchased. The designs were incredibly detailed, making this one of the most relaxing experiences, helping me cool down after a long day. The final product as well, no matter what colors I filled it in with, was so beautiful. The blank page was a super smart move from the author as it made sure the colors on the different drawings didn't overlap. Overall 10/10 experience, I highly recommend. I wish there were more drawings tho!!

Really satisfied with my purches. The texture of the paper is a perfect match for my wide range of crayons feel-wise, escpecially when compared to other coloring books. It's a great way to relax and exercise my creativity. Lines are clear and well drawn, I can't wait for the newer book to drop. Would recommend !

Beautiful Illustrations!

I just received this book today and the drawings in this book are stunning. The pages are printed on one side to prevent bleed through. The pages are thin, though, so, if you are going to use markers, I would recommend using a blotter page. Even though I will most likely be using colored pencils, I may use a blank page in between to prevent pressure marks. The illustrations are so beautiful that I can hardly wait to start coloring. I will definitely be buying more books from this creator.

Prefectures of Japan

What is the Prefectures of Japan coloring series?

Prefectures of Japan is a coloring collection by Sora Mikami that explores the country one prefecture at a time. Each book gathers 40 original black-line illustrations rooted in the things that prefecture considers its own, drawn for slow, mindful attention.

How many books are in the series?

Forty-seven, one for every Japanese prefecture, from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south. They are being released over time, and can be coloured in any order.

Which volumes are available now?

Fifteen volumes are published so far: Hokkaido (Volume 1), Aomori (Volume 2), Iwate (Volume 3), Miyagi (Volume 4), Akita (Volume 5), Yamagata (Volume 6), Fukushima (Volume 7), Ibaraki (Volume 8), Tochigi (Volume 9), Gunma (Volume 10), Saitama (Volume 11), Chiba (Volume 12), Tokyo (Volume 13), Kanagawa (Volume 14), Niigata (Volume 15). The remaining prefectures are on the way. Join the newsletter to hear when each new volume goes live.

What is inside each prefecture book?

Forty original line illustrations of one prefecture, a mix of detailed and breathable compositions, printed single-sided on white paper. Each volume opens with a short editorial introduction to the prefecture, written in the register of a magazine essay rather than a guidebook.

What size and format are the books?

Every volume is an 8.5 x 8.5 inch square paperback with single-sided pages to prevent bleed-through. The square format sits comfortably in the hand and gives each illustration room to breathe.

Do I need to colour them in order?

Not at all. The volumes are independent and can be coloured in any order. Together they sketch the whole of Japan one place at a time.

Where can I buy the Prefectures of Japan books?

All published volumes are available on Amazon as paperbacks at $9.99 each. Search for Sora Mikami on Amazon or visit the author page for the full collection.
